Mise-en-scëne
Mise-en-scëne is a French term, originating from theatre that literally means, “put in the scene.” Composition within the frame drives the focus and concept. In film it is meant to describe extended views of a scene that allow the audience to gather a wealth of information regarding character and location without language. This information can be used as a subtext to enhance ideas within an image. Subtext refers to all of a character’s inner life that has risen to the level of consciousness. It includes inner monologue and the thoughts that take the form of ideas expressed as still or moving images.
